Also known as the gully-hawk, scatter-hawk, or brushbird. A wild bird of prey found in scrublands and brushy jungle, including the wilderness surrounding County Whitecrest. Believed to have acquired magical powers when a fragment of athyra genetic material was transposed into their ancestors.

Pairs of thorn-hawks build their nest in low brush, over which the male stands guard while the female hunts. Magic is used by the male to conceal the nest, making their eggs difficult to acquire. Such eggs are highly valuable, because one in ten is a natural repository for vast psychic energies, such that the act of crushing it will temporarily empower a trained psychics expert or witch to undertake magics normally beyond their own abilities.
