Non-spoiler Summary[]
Following the events of Hawk, Vlad needs a safe place to hole up while he resolves his conflict with the Left Hand of the Jhereg.
Plot Summary[]
Having successfully negotiated a peace with the Organization, Vlad must now find a way to protect himself from the vengeance of the Left Hand. What is an on-the-run ex-assassin to do? Flee the city? Hole up in Dzur Mountain or Castle Black? Finding none of these options appealing, instead, Vlad decides to go to the theater.
While there, the Manager of the theater approaches Vlad with a request for assistance with a Jhereg-related problem, connected to the performance of their current production of a once-banned musical show that might injure the pride of certain Lyorn nobles. In addition, he's got the Left Hand after him. What will put Vlad over the edge first? The Left Hand? The Lyorn? The incessant singing?
Role of the House[]
Lyorn, the house, is about legacy and tradition.

Memorable Quotes[]
Speaking with the director about producing your life story as a play
She tilted her head. "I'll bet your story could be turned into an interesting show."
"Several of them, I'm sure," I said "But there wouldn't be any singing."
"We can always add singing."
"Don't threaten me."
---
"Wisdom is what you get when your knowledge turns out to be inadequate."
---
Haichfa, looking for the right phrase:
"What? Oh. I was looking for words. Normally I don't have to do that, you know. They got writers to give me those things."
---
"There is nothing quite like an orchestra tuning up. It is discordant and annoying, and yet it generates anticipation; there is a promise there, that from the meaningless noise will emerge its opposite. If I were an Athyra, I'd find there some kind of metaphor for life. But I'm just an Easterner who used to be a Jhereg; we don't find metaphors, we just sell onions."
---
"We're all going to die."
"That's the spirit!"
